Week One 2017

project-life

Hi there. Yep. Once a very long time ago we used to know each other. I was the author of the ‘Betwixt and Between’ blog, you know, before life got busy and I lost my way. I don’t mind telling you, at the end of last year I seriously considered giving up scrapbooking in all of its forms. I was so drained of inspiration and I felt like nothing I was coming up with was particularly innovative. I felt like I had really hit a wall. Then at the 11th hour I got an email from Studio Calico asking if I would be a part of January’s Documenter Workshop. I hadn’t done a Project Life spread in over 6 months, but on the other hand they really weren’t asking much. A single PL spread and a couple a paragraphs on how it came together. Pretty simple really. The day my  kit arrived I leafed though the cards looking at all the designs. If I were actually selling you this kit, this would be the part where I’d tell you – “they were all so pretty” and they were, but honestly it was the large amount of well designed journaling cards that took my eye. I got to thinking about story telling and life with Eva. You see ever since Eva was born I’ve been struggling to include more words in my pages. As a person who has always been about design first, story second it’s a difficult new balance to strike.

I gathered the photos for my spread and left my Studio Calico pouch out on my desk. Then, that night as I went to bed I thought of all the possible variations there was to tell our story with this kit. Each time I woke up during the night to feed Eva, I thought about it some more. Then as the sun peaked through the blinds a little after 5.30, I bounced out of bed. I was FINALLY inspired again. When Eva woke up at 8, I was just putting on the finishing touches to the spread. It was the most pleasurable couple of hours I had spent in my studio in a long time and that’s why I am back here. I am returning to my roots.

So while this is not the spread I created for the Documenter Workshop, this is second spread I have made with Studio Calico’s January Documenter Kit, a few little stickers from the Maggie Holmes ‘Shine’ Sticker Pack, an old flair from a Scraptastic Kit and a digital stamp from Ann-Maire Loves Paper. So without further ado:

I know you can’t make out a single detail when I photograph them together, but look at the balance across the two pages makes me so happy.

Week One Left Side by Aimee Dow

Pink, Green, Black, White and Gold was my palette for this spread.

Week One Right Side by Aimee Dow

If this weeks spread had a theme it really would be summed up with the ‘Dreams Do Come True’ card. We had a brilliant start to the new year. CJ had the week of work, so it meant a lot more happy little excursions than normal. We spent a lovely afternoon at the botanical garden, exploring the fairy garden, playing on the swings and trying out Eva’s new trike that we got her for Christmas. I can not even begin to tell you how hard it was to choose just one photo from that little adventure.

Week One Detail 2 by Aimee Dow

On Wednesday CJ suggested with walk to our local cafe for breakfast. This cafe is super hip… and super packed. By the time we got breakfast, it was lunchtime and poor little Eva ready for a nap. She never even made it half way home on the trike. CJ had to carry her home. Once again a million photos of the super cool cafe but the one of her asleep on CJ’s shoulder was my fave.

There was also the small matter of a the heat wave. It had been pushing 40 Celsius all week here. There was A LOT of time in the kiddy pool, time on the couch with not much clothing, watching cartons.

aimeedow_week1_2017_detail6

On the weekend however, we really partied from one end of the scale to the other. Eva’s best friend turned one. Linc’s mother and I were friends in birthing class last year so I think it’s totally fair to say they were friends before birth. Then that evening we travelled to visit Eva’s Poppy who turned 79. Needless to say that was a much more subdued affair.

aimeedow_week1_2017_detail4

That pretty much wraps up our week, but before I go I at least have to share a pic of my favourite card. It has the same saying on the back in the same color scheme if you don’t love the green. I personally do.

Oh Studio Calico, teller of the truth. So here’s to the new year, new chances and a whole lot more Project Life.

Sweet Funny Baby

scrapbooking

Happy Easter! We are having an awesome weekend celebrating Eva’s first Easter or at least I am because the only way my darling daughter is eating chocolate is if I get to first – I won’t fill in that mental image for you. I did promise though, that she can eat as many as she likes for breakfast next year during a particularly hairy moment where I was trying to pry a brightly coloured foil confection out of her hand (which I may have put there for photographic purposes) as she desperately sort to cram it in to her mouth. Hopefully we both forget by this time next year or better yet she doesn’t learn to read my blog by then.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I’m hosting the Citrus Twist Sketch Challenge this weekend. You can find it over here.

Happiness +

scrapbooking

I love babies. I love baby cuddles. I love all the baby accessories and baby scrapbook papers! This tiny little creature is the most fascinating thing that’s ever crossed my path and I was a farm girl for a few years. Some of those animals… Oh right, not pertinent to the current story. What I was going to say was my new favourite thing to scrap is firsts. SO MANY FIRSTS! I fear very shortly you may see pages dedicated to the first time Eva uses the potty or time I have to un-jam her from somewhere. Today however, we are here to celebrate Eva’s first ever bath.

I made this page with March’s Citrus Twist Main kit. They are not normally papers I would choose, they are however the colours of a 40 year old maternity unit AND the Pink Paislee paper reminded me of bubbles. On a side note, if and when we decide to have another bubba it will be in our cities new hospital. I saw the plans for the maternity ward while I was there – it’s blue.

Daddy did an awesome job washing little bubba, which was not an easy task given how much hair she was born with and her not so immediate love of water. So I feel a little bad making such a girly page. Once again though… BUBBLES PAPER! I even punched a few out to add as embellishment along with an obscenely large amount of puffy stickers. I’m just going to say for texture and dimension. Has nothing to do with their squishy, shiny goodness.

Oh and cut apart sheets. I find now if I cut them up when they arrive, I use them a whole lot more. This is the sheet from bloom. How cute is my little duo? I could look at this photo all day *heart eyes emoji*. Where did my newborn go? Feels like just yesterday I had a squishy warm bundle that slept a lot. Now I have a chubby cheeked bubba that’s just learnt to blow raspberries. Crazy.

Project Life Week 1

project-life

Welcome back to yet another year of Project Life here on the blog. This will be my 3rd year and yet it feels almost brand new again. Since Eva was born my scrapbooking really has taken on new meaning. In short ‘More Stories, Less Time for Design’. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still going to cram in as much design as I can, but only in nap hours.

AimeeDow_Week1_FullSpread_O copy

This month I’ll be rocking February’s Hip Kits:

AimeeDow_Week1_LeftSide_WebEdit

Oh and maybe a little digital stamp, *cough* and some brilliant Lora Bailora tape that happened to arrive the same day as my kit and I just couldn’t resist trying it out.

AimeeDow_Week1_RightSide_WebEdit

All in all Week 1 was a CRAZY week. I was still trying to figure up how to be a mum, when my Pa took a tumble down some stairs and fractured a few ribs. Once in hospital things took a turn for the worse and Pa suffered a collapsed lung, pneumonia and kidney failure. I’m happy to say after a week in ICU he managed to turn it round. Oh and if that were not enough our closest friends moved to the other side of the country. So much for a slow start to the year.

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail1_WebEdit

I took the colours for this spread from this picture of Eva. It may not be the best photo, but I just love my squishy, warm, sleepy baby cuddles first thing in the morning. It was a complete and utter fluke that the first book I read to her matched her binky. Hip Kits had a great mix of products this month too. Crate paper…paper, fantastic Amy Tangerine Thickers, Maggie Holmes stickers, Studio Calico Veneers, but my favourite by far is the Shimelle Chipboard.

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail2_WebEdit

Oh and all the Pink Paislee C’est La Vie Goodness! In fact that’s my tip for this spread. I hid the journalling about Pa’s hospital stint under a flap I created from a C’est La Vie cut apart sheet (Card on the right).

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail3_WebEdit

My favourite design feature is this really simple card I made with Amy Tangerine’s ‘Better Together’ paper, A Maggie Holmes Bloom Heart and a banner I made myself. I love the mix of textures and it took 5 minutes to make.

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail4_WebEdit

This however would have to be my favourite story. Did you know, scientific studies show that parents are less happy after having kids than before? There are a ton of other great upsides to having rug rats such as joy, self-forfillment, pride, etc. Personally though I LOVE being a mum and I can honestly say, even on a trifecta day (You know, the days where your little charming bundle of joy manages to vomit, sneeze usually with a mouth full of breast milk, pee or poo on you) yeah you guessed it, I got all 3 in one day, I am genuinely happy in my new gig. I think part of the reason is that I am making an effort to mark these happy moments.

Oh and if you want to get your hands on this months Hip Kits or next months seen here:

I’d love you to create along side of me. That and you NEED all the awesome Pink Fresh Felicity collection and Basic Grey’s Saturday Morning.

The day my heart exploded – Eva

scrapbooking

Been awhile, huh? I know, I made plans with you all for December Daily, but you know what they say about the best laid plans? Yeah… Meet bubba Eva. The original plan was to push though until the 21st and catch up on the last couple of days when life found balance again. In reality I got as far as the 4th. On the 5th CJ and I went into the city to the twilight Christmas market. I took a ton of photos before coming home and getting ready for bed. I lay in bed thinking about the kind of layout I would make and “POP”! My waters broke. Thus began an adventure like no other. One day, I might come back and tell you all about it, but right now I’ll just share the second layout in Eva’s Album.

AimeeDow_Eva_Instagram

This was created for the Citrus Twist’s Sunday Sketch Challenge about my new favourite subject matter. In fact I may never scrapbook about anything else again!

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail1

I count myself really lucky to have had an instant bond with our precious little mouse. From the second I saw her, I was head over head in love.

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail3

It’s a little hard to tell from this photo, but the only thing Eva got from me was that nose. Everything else is all her dad. From the thick full head of dark hair to her very long legs.

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail2

I struggled with the journaling on this page. I love the concept of the typewriter and in a way it kinda saved me. All of a sudden I have SO MUCH I want to write on a page. I have a million things about the 7th that I want to tell her. I want her to know just how amazing her dad was for all of the labour, even though he had only 3 hours sleep. I want her to know about the midwives who were so fantastic and how freaking proud I was of myself to make it to 7cm with only Panadol, but I’m not sure yet where to even start. For now I just settled on the facts. I typed them up on a strip of cardstock and made a small cut between the rollers of my fussy cut typewriter so it looked just like a working typewriter.

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail4

A small amount of stitching and stamping bought the whole thing together. I’m not usually a sketch person, but I am super happy with how this one turned out. I would even go as far to say I am happy to put it in her album. Partly because the design is awesome, but I also have a feeling there will be a need to balance out ALL the pink layouts in her future.
