ECT: April Love Links

everyday

Good Morning. I sat at my desk this morning to write out my May Love Links for the Essence Creative Team post and the first thing that dawned on me was that I had forgotten to post April’s list here. Silly me. My theme for April was stationery. A hard topic for sure, but I managed to narrow it down to these 4 brands.

Rifle Paper Co. / Quill & Fox / Minted / Kikki K

To see the full post and what Caylee is crushing on last month head over here.

P.s. Any ideas for love link themes to would like to see in future?

Project Life Week 6 2014

project-life

Okay, I am just about to show you something you have never seen before. I say this for two reasons: 1. I have never seen it before and I have seen thousands of Project Life Pages and 2. Until very recently I was not even aware this style of Project Life Pocket Pages existed. Have I piqued your interest? Good. Here is my Week 6.

Right about now, you’re probably wondering how the hell I got a 12 by 12 photo into the middle of a spread. The answer, my friends, is Essence Brand Pocket Pages. In truth, I have had this idea for a while. In week 18 last year, I had a really hard week and used my favorite Instagram picture for the week to cover up one side of the spread. However, I struggled to make the layout look balanced. Almost a year later, I have another terrible week and I find myself thinking back. Here is how I solved the problem this time:

Left Side

Right Side

I made the decision really early on to blow up the picture of the Apple TV remote on my PJ pants because it reminded me of a pattern paper and I thought it would make a great graphic element.

The title pretty much says it all. I have absolutely no fear of public speaking, I once dated a guy who kept pet snakes and that never fazed me, but you need only mention the word dentist and I am quivering in my boots. Part of the problem is that I’m allergic to pain killers, so after the anesthetic wears off… yeah, it’s not pretty. I had known for a while that I needed a few teeth removed, so the plan was to keep me mildly sedated until the end of the week. For project life though, that means I didn’t take a lot of photos because I didn’t really move off the couch.

Oh except for the obligatory dental clinic waiting room photo.

I also included a sublime essence journaling card. The great thing about this card was the circle design reinforced the circle elements (such as the buttons on the remote), and the color theme is so neutral, it was easily teamed with bright colors.

The right side has a title that mirrors the left side. I didn’t think my husband would be thrilled about me singing his praises in a title, so I made it a little more discrete. It is far easier to see in real life than it is in the photo. I’m not entirely sure why.

The next photo is of my little couch buddy. Mica usually doesn’t hang out with me on the couch. I don’t sit still long enough, but it turns out when I’m sedated – I’m her best friend! Our lounge room is very dark, so when I lightened it, it developed a grain. I just loved the way it looks under the essence transparency so I decided to keep it in the spread.

Last but not least is another essence journaling card. I picked it because it reminded me of a hospital admission form. I added the tear strip from the 6×6 pad to balance the red across my spread and added two hole punches to make it look like it came out of the binder. I may have also done this because there was already a hole in the tear strip.

And that wraps up my Week 6. I hope you enjoyed this peek inside my album. Any questions, just leave them in the comments.

5 on the fifth: April Edition

photography

Good Morning! I am so stoked this morning. The rain has stopped, it’s Friday and I have my very first post on the ruby rock-it blog. Wicked happy right now.

So just to fill you in – One of the new features we will be introducing to the Ruby Rock-it blog is something called “5 on the 5th” which (I’m not going to lie) is a lot like Stephanie Bryan’s 12 on the 12th, except for the fact that 1. I struggle to remember to take 12 photos on any given day, so we thought 5 was more manageable and 2. We take it one step further in the way we display them. So without further ado, here is my 5 on the 5th April Edition:

For a better rundown on exactly what happened on this particular Saturday, you can check out the post here.

I’m really happy with the way mine turned out, but I would like to take a minute to talk about the other Essence CT girls. This is the first post for all of us over on the Ruby Rock-it blog and it would mean a lot to me if you would go over and leave them some love too. We are the new team on the block and we are all a little unsure of where we’re headed. If you like what you see, let the girls know. We do really appreciate it.

Mira was the first to finish her 5. Which amuses me greatly because her ‘fifth’ ends nearly 12 hours behind my own. I had taken and edited my photos, but I hadn’t come up with a way to display them. I was sent a copy of Mira’s and an idea hit me like a freight train. What I love most about Mira’s is the way it tells the story of her table. Such an everyday object that she just kept coming back to throughout the day. I also love that she was able to include the title. See Mira’s 5 on the 5th here.

Caylee on the other hand has a layout similar to Mira, but it tells a totally different story. Caylee used all 5 of her photos on breakfast, but you’ll notice it has a very unexpected colour palette. If you’ve been here awhile, you know I’m a colour fanatic. There was just something so amazing about how her rings matched the wall and table. Perfection in every way. See Caylee’s 5 on the 5th here.

Sal, our fearless leader. It’s funny actually, when I was really struggling to bring it all together, I sent her an email asking how I should be presenting my photos. I asked for an example because I thought it best if all the CT had some continuity. Her reply was not one that I had anticipated. Sal told me continuity is great and here is what Mira has done, but I would much rather you do it in your own style. So I did and so did Sal. Sal’s to me, looks like it could be a page from a great photo book. It has depth and layers and great attention has been paid right down to the shadowing and the choice of type. If Sal keeps with the same style at the end of it all, she will have the most beautiful “day in the life” album. You can see Sal’s 5 on the 5th here.

You have already seen mine but you’re welcome to go leave me love over there too.
