Project Life Week 1

project-life

Welcome back to yet another year of Project Life here on the blog. This will be my 3rd year and yet it feels almost brand new again. Since Eva was born my scrapbooking really has taken on new meaning. In short ‘More Stories, Less Time for Design’. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still going to cram in as much design as I can, but only in nap hours.

This month I’ll be rocking February’s Hip Kits:

Oh and maybe a little digital stamp, *cough* and some brilliant Lora Bailora tape that happened to arrive the same day as my kit and I just couldn’t resist trying it out.

AimeeDow_Week1_RightSide_WebEdit

All in all Week 1 was a CRAZY week. I was still trying to figure up how to be a mum, when my Pa took a tumble down some stairs and fractured a few ribs. Once in hospital things took a turn for the worse and Pa suffered a collapsed lung, pneumonia and kidney failure. I’m happy to say after a week in ICU he managed to turn it round. Oh and if that were not enough our closest friends moved to the other side of the country. So much for a slow start to the year.

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail1_WebEdit

I took the colours for this spread from this picture of Eva. It may not be the best photo, but I just love my squishy, warm, sleepy baby cuddles first thing in the morning. It was a complete and utter fluke that the first book I read to her matched her binky. Hip Kits had a great mix of products this month too. Crate paper…paper, fantastic Amy Tangerine Thickers, Maggie Holmes stickers, Studio Calico Veneers, but my favourite by far is the Shimelle Chipboard.

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail2_WebEdit

Oh and all the Pink Paislee C’est La Vie Goodness! In fact that’s my tip for this spread. I hid the journalling about Pa’s hospital stint under a flap I created from a C’est La Vie cut apart sheet (Card on the right).

AimeeDow_Week1_Detail3_WebEdit

My favourite design feature is this really simple card I made with Amy Tangerine’s ‘Better Together’ paper, A Maggie Holmes Bloom Heart and a banner I made myself. I love the mix of textures and it took 5 minutes to make.

This however would have to be my favourite story. Did you know, scientific studies show that parents are less happy after having kids than before? There are a ton of other great upsides to having rug rats such as joy, self-forfillment, pride, etc. Personally though I LOVE being a mum and I can honestly say, even on a trifecta day (You know, the days where your little charming bundle of joy manages to vomit, sneeze usually with a mouth full of breast milk, pee or poo on you) yeah you guessed it, I got all 3 in one day, I am genuinely happy in my new gig. I think part of the reason is that I am making an effort to mark these happy moments.

Oh and if you want to get your hands on this months Hip Kits or next months seen here:

I’d love you to create along side of me. That and you NEED all the awesome Pink Fresh Felicity collection and Basic Grey’s Saturday Morning.

The day my heart exploded – Eva

scrapbooking

Been awhile, huh? I know, I made plans with you all for December Daily, but you know what they say about the best laid plans? Yeah… Meet bubba Eva. The original plan was to push though until the 21st and catch up on the last couple of days when life found balance again. In reality I got as far as the 4th. On the 5th CJ and I went into the city to the twilight Christmas market. I took a ton of photos before coming home and getting ready for bed. I lay in bed thinking about the kind of layout I would make and “POP”! My waters broke. Thus began an adventure like no other. One day, I might come back and tell you all about it, but right now I’ll just share the second layout in Eva’s Album.

AimeeDow_Eva_Instagram

This was created for the Citrus Twist’s Sunday Sketch Challenge about my new favourite subject matter. In fact I may never scrapbook about anything else again!

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail1

I count myself really lucky to have had an instant bond with our precious little mouse. From the second I saw her, I was head over head in love.

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail3

It’s a little hard to tell from this photo, but the only thing Eva got from me was that nose. Everything else is all her dad. From the thick full head of dark hair to her very long legs.

I struggled with the journaling on this page. I love the concept of the typewriter and in a way it kinda saved me. All of a sudden I have SO MUCH I want to write on a page. I have a million things about the 7th that I want to tell her. I want her to know just how amazing her dad was for all of the labour, even though he had only 3 hours sleep. I want her to know about the midwives who were so fantastic and how freaking proud I was of myself to make it to 7cm with only Panadol, but I’m not sure yet where to even start. For now I just settled on the facts. I typed them up on a strip of cardstock and made a small cut between the rollers of my fussy cut typewriter so it looked just like a working typewriter.

AimeeDow_CTDEC_Eva_Detail4

A small amount of stitching and stamping bought the whole thing together. I’m not usually a sketch person, but I am super happy with how this one turned out. I would even go as far to say I am happy to put it in her album. Partly because the design is awesome, but I also have a feeling there will be a need to balance out ALL the pink layouts in her future.

Citrus Twist Kits: Together Whatever

scrapbooking

I’m not sure how this one slipped through to the keeper, but this would have to be my second favourite layout at the moment. AimeeDow_TogetherForever

I pride myself on being honest so I am just going to come out and say it – Memorandum is not a favourite collection of mine. So the fact that all the pattern paper in this layout is from Memorandum is a huge surprise to me. I think it’s part of the why I love it so much. To me it marks a turning pointing is my scrapping career. For years I have looked on with envy as my friends create layouts with products I KNOW they dislike and yet they are so AMAZING! This is the first time I feel like I have accomplished it for myself, but I guess that’s also a testament to the added extras in Citrus Twists October Kits and the irony of it all is – this page actually makes me like the collection more.

AimeeDow_CTCT_TogetherWhaterever_Detail2

The other reason I love this page so much is because of the subject matter.  I had been saving this photo for something special because it’s my family in a nutshell. Mica, CJ and I are with each other 24/7 and while none of us could really be considered ‘normal’ we fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. I just think there is a certain kind of magic to that. Take for example Mica. Mica is a pure breed tonkinese. She came from a very reputable breeder and I met both her mum and dad who had fantastic personalities, but there is probably a really good reason why house guests call her the pet of satan. On more than one occasion she has trapped house guests in the bathroom and refuses to let them out. To CJ and I though, she is as sweet as pie. I’ll even go one step further. Mica is technically my cat from a previous relationship, but she could easy be mistaken for CJ’s. Mica follows him everywhere. Should he ever sit down for longer than 2 minutes – she is all over him like a politician on a cute and cuddly baby.

Hence my title. Together Whatever. The story of my family and a whole lot of fierce love.

November Jot Moodboard

scrapbooking

One of the biggest things I cherish about being a Jot Girl is it let’s me going shopping in my own stash. I love just spending an afternoon creating with the things I find in the bottom of a draw or in the miscellaneous embellishment basket. It almost always produces my favourite kind of layouts – even if (as you will soon see) I wander a little off task.

AimeeDow_JotMoodboardNov_MyFave

This is one of my favourite layouts in a long time. The moodboard made me think of spring and the sweet things in life. So that’s where I started my layout. My layout is all about simple pleasures, like handmade vintage quilts, roses from the garden, new magazines and all many other happy things. It turns out though, my happy things just couldn’t be limited to pink and yellow…

NovemberKimJcopy

To be fair I did start out with a plan just use pink and yellow. I went though all my scraps in the scrap bucket and pulled everything pink and yellow, but as I was nearing the bottom of bucket I found some vintage orange floral brocade from basic grey. It had to be at least 5 years old because I know for a fact I hadn’t used it in this house and we have been here just over 4 years now. The brocade was a perfect match for the roses in my photo and I figured I was only slightly bending the rules because of course I was still using a floral element.

AimeeDow_JotMoodboardNov_MyFaveDetail1

So right about now you might now ask yourself how I ended up with the green and mint. Well I just kinda needed it for balance. I must admit I have this fight with myself a lot – Do you stay true to the challenge or take a detour to something that is possibly better? Eh… no prizes for guessing which path I ended up on.

AimeeDow_JotMoodboardNov_MyFaveDetail2

It just turned out be the right call on that particular day. Believe me there have been many days when it wasn’t, but I am a big fan of the old saying nothing ventured, nothing gained. ‘My Fave’ is my new fave layout and even though it was more of a jumping off point than direct inspiration, I have this months Jot Moodboard to thank for it.

I would absolutely love to see how this board inspires you. Be sure to load your project to the Jot Moodboard Gallery over here, for a chance to win great prizes and lots love from our amazing community.

October Jot Mood Board

scrapbooking

One of the hardest parts of scrapbooking semi professionally is when you have to sit on layout until a publishing date. Often the better you think a layout is, the harder it is to wait. So let me just start off by saying – keeping this layout under wraps for a mere week has been absolute torture.

AimeeDow_HelloAdventure_JotMoodBoardOct2015

I know, I am usually the first to excuse myself when things get messy, but when you see this mood board, it is honestly perfection:

LeanneMoodBoard

Leanne Allison blew all of us Jot girls away with this one and the projects that the other girls produced really reflect that (See gallery here). I personally love Natalie Elphinstone’s card which has a very literal take on the board with her amazing water coloured map and I seriously can’t get enough of Kim Archer’s page. How can someone create something that looks so random in construction and yet have perfect balance? Amazing.

For me though, it was as if the mood board told an entirely different story. Each picture was a peice of a bigger puzzle – The colour palette and world map spoke to me of adventure and exploration – Both ideas I  eagerly wanted to include in my page.

AimeeDow_HelloAdventure_JotMoodBoardOct_Detail2

While the hand drawn circles and the watercolour swatch reminded me of cartography and topological maps, which I tried to emulate this ideas by cutting out mountains and then watercolored behind them. I also took a slightly different direction when it came to the hand drawn circles. I decided instead to hand draw lines on my page, so it looked like a map that had been folded up in someone’s pocket… you know before we all carried maps on our phones?

AimeeDow_HelloAdventure_JotMoodBoardOct_Detail1

The paint, if I am brutally honest, was a complete and utter experiment. I had no idea what I was doing or what it would look like. I just went with my gut. I am so wrapped with how it all came together in the end. It seemed only fitting that I should use one of my all time favourite photos as us the centre piece.

If you have the time, I really do urge you to give this challenge a go. The projects this little old mood board has inspired already show it’s amazing inspirational powers AND if you enter it over on the Jot blog there is a chance to win prizes! Double yay! I can not wait to see what you all come up with.
