Citrus Twist Kits: Progress

scrapbooking

Hi, I am over on the Citrus Twist Blog today, hosting the ‘3 to Inspire’ challenge. I’d love it if you stopped by or decided to play along. You can find all the details over there, but right here and now let me tell you about the layout. Progress is a bit different to my usual layouts because of it’s philosophical nature.ย AimeeDow_3toInspireCTCT_Progress copy

It has a lot to do with my current condition actually. I am the first to admit that I can be a giant pain in the butt to work with. I set incredibly high standards for myself and if the finished product isn’t perfect, then it often deemed a waste of time. Or at least that was what it was like when I had all the time and energy in the world. At 7 months pregnant the world is a very different place. I am tired ALL THE TIME and I can’t stand in front of my desk for hours like I used too. I have slowly come learn that perfection is nice, but with dwindling energy reserves it might just be to higher price to pay, especially if the process makes you misrable. Progress on the other hand can be just as fulfilling, without draining me of all the energy I have and I may later rescind this remark, but I am even beginning to understand that there is beauty in imperfection. So if you were wondering what was written on the hidden tag – that’s pretty much it, in a nut shell.

On a less philosophical plain, most the supplies for this layout have come from the this months Citrus Twist Main Kit and Embellishment kit. I added the neon tag from kikki-k. The digital stamp on the photo comes from Paislee Press’s ‘On my Desk‘ Collection and the wreaths are a cut fileย from the Silhouette store. The rest is all my work in progress ๐Ÿ˜‰

October Jot Mood Board

scrapbooking

One of the hardest parts of scrapbooking semi professionally is when you have to sit on layout until a publishing date. Often the better you think a layout is, the harder it is to wait. So let me just start off by saying – keeping this layout under wraps for a mere week has been absolute torture.

AimeeDow_HelloAdventure_JotMoodBoardOct2015

I know, I am usually the first to excuse myself when things get messy, but when you see this mood board, it is honestly perfection:

LeanneMoodBoard

Leanne Allison blew all of us Jot girls away with this one and the projects that the other girls produced really reflect that (See gallery here). I personally love Natalie Elphinstone’s card which has a very literal take on the board with her amazing water coloured map and I seriously can’t get enough of Kim Archer’s page. How can someone create something that looks so random in construction and yet have perfect balance? Amazing.

For me though, it was as if the mood board told an entirely different story. Each picture was a peice of a bigger puzzle –ย The colour palette and world map spoke to me of adventure and exploration – Both ideas I ย eagerly wanted to include in my page.

While the hand drawn circles and the watercolour swatch reminded me of cartographyย and topological maps, which I tried to emulate this ideas byย cutting out mountains and then watercolored behind them. I also took a slightly different direction when it came to the hand drawn circles. I decided instead to hand draw lines on my page, so it looked like a map that had been folded up in someoneโ€™s pocketโ€ฆ you know before we all carried maps on our phones?

The paint, if I am brutally honest, was a complete and utter experiment. I had no idea what I was doing or what it would look like. I just went with my gut. I am so wrapped with how it all came together in the end. It seemed only fitting that I should use one of my all time favourite photos as us the centre piece.

If you have the time, I really do urge you to give this challenge a go. The projects this little old mood board has inspired already show it’s amazing inspirational powers AND if you enter it over on the Jot blog there is a chance to win prizes! Double yay! I can not wait to see what you all come up with.

Citrus Twist Kits: Once Upon A Time

scrapbooking

I’m over on the Citrus Twist blog today with a trip down memory lane.

Once Upon A Time by Aimee Dow

I don’t know, there is something about turning 31 that’s turned me all sentimental. I took this photo months and months ago. It’s of an old pie factory in my home town. It’s been closed for years and set for demolition soon, but I remember a time when it was buzzing with people. I think I would have been about 6? I remember going with both my pa’s to pick up pies for the soccer and swimming clubs. It’s got me thinking about geographical history. Should this be a topic we cover more in our family albums? Food for thought I guess.

One Little Bird: TV Guide and Other Lists

do-it-yourself

We interrupt your scheduled scrapbooking broadcast to bring you this special DIY project – A TV guide. Alright, so its much more than just a TV guide, but at the time of creation I was in desperate need of one.

One Little Bird TV Guide by Aimee Dow
Lately, Iโ€™ve noticed Iโ€™m slowing down. Not really that usual for a woman who is 6 months pregnant, but it does mean I need to rest a lot – like when I bend over to tie my shoe and somehow manage to wind myself?!?! I have also found that with the long winter I have been watching more TV. There is just one slight problem with these new developments, I canโ€™t for the life of me remember when my shows are on or where to find them!

There is absolutely no doubt my husband is technical genius. He has set up one of the most high tech entertainment systems known to man – you just need a engineering degree to operate it. TiVO, Pay TV, Apple TV, Netflix, the list is huge and it all works brilliantly, until I get my hands on it. The poor guy has to constantly remind me that there are shows waiting for me.
So when Peppermint released the new collection Agenda, I decided it was time to take matters in to my own hands. I would make my own tv guide with ‘days’ that could be switched out and replace at the drop of hat, but the further along I got in to project the more I saw itโ€™s potential for other lists: daily to-do lists, honey do lists, kidโ€™s chore roster, cleaning schedule, the possibilities are endless.

Citrus Twist Kits: Recipe Challenge

scrapbooking

I am SO FREAKING EXCITED about today’s post. ย I mean seriously! This post will go down in history as one of my all time favourite posts because one of THE BEST scrappers IN THE WORLD (in my opinion) asked ME to do a joint post. I bet she regrets it now, but I still got to do it. Let me cut you some slack and just give you the link : Citrus Twist Recipe Challenge.

If however you’re good with reading me wax lyrically about Emma and our layouts, read on. Okay, ready? Emma asked me to do a Recipe Challenge and it was so awesome! I am perpetually late for everything so it was decided Emma would set the challenge and then I would do my own layout with the recipe without seeing hers. I’m a fly by the seat of your pants kinda girl, so I went for it.

Here is the recipe:

  • Die-cuts (at least 5)
  • layers
  • stitching (machine or hand)
  • 1 veneerย
  • Cut file (and if you want to be extra tricky, try and use it as a digital stamp and your title, or a stencil like me)

And heres what I came up with BUT first let impress upon you this is only half of the gold. Em rocked this challenge out of the park with some tricky magic all of her own.

AimeeDow_CoffeeCoffeeCoffee

All I used was the Main Citrus Twist Kit for September and can I just say how refreshing it is to get a WHOLE ephemera pack in a kit! It made choosing 5 die cuts so much easier. I did however include the business card from the cafe too.Coffee Coffee Coffee by Aimee Dow Detail 1

The hard part was just 1 veneer. I’d never seen these ones from pinkfresh studio and again you get a WHOLE pack. I spent ages trying to choose between the hearts, circles, banners and bunting (They all have bows! I’m such a sucker for bows).

AimeeDow_CTCT_CoffeeCoffeeCoffee_Sept15_Detail2

I layered my embellishments the best I could, especially since there is only 4 pieces of pattern paper in the layout, but the part I am most proud of is Emma’s tricky cut file title challenge. How to take a cut file to a new level? You have all seen me use the negative before, but I don’t think I have ever used it as a stencil! That’s right peeps – I used a prima chalk inker (dry sand) to make a print though my cut.

AimeeDow_CTCT_CoffeeCoffeeCoffee_Sept15_Detail3

That just leaves the stitching and if I am brutally honest I broke the sewing machine and by “broke” I mean even with the help of you tube I can figure out how to get the bobbin back in. So it’s hand stitching all the way for me. Or I could just sew on a few buttons. I’ve decided it’s not lazy, it’s innovative ๐Ÿ˜‰ Not quiet as innovative as Em’s, but still awesome!

So, who wants to come play with us? Please, please, please! Go see the original post and get some great inspiration from Emma. Tag us on Instagram, post in the Citrus Twist gallery, give it your best shot, we are dying to see what you come up with.
